SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Harford women’s softball team takes to the road this weekend as they travel to Savannah, Ga. for the fifth annual Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Smash Hit Spring Break Tournament from March 6-8 at the Paulson Softball Complex. The Fighting Owls (0-2) will be looking for their first win of the season as they take on Mercyhurst North East, Chattanooga State Tech, Coastal Georgia, Pitt and St. Mary (Kansas).
Harford is coming off an opening weekend doubleheader loss against Mercer, falling 19-4 (5 inn.) and 12-0 (5 inn.) in games one and two, respectively on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Harford Softball Field.
Sophomore Jocelyn Kelly (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led the Owls on the weekend, going 2-for-5 with one run scored and a double, both hits coming in the game one loss, where she was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Sophomore Katie Irwin (0-1) (Edgewood, Md./Harford Tech) and freshman Sarah Cooley (0-1) (Clermont, Fla./Bel Air) were tabbed with the hard-luck losses as Irwin gave up 19 runs (13 earned) on 23 hits in 5.0 innings while striking out six and Cooley surrendered 12 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits while also fanning six batters in 5.0 innings.
Gina Pagano led the Vikings (2-0) on the weekend, going 6-for-7 with four runs scored, a double, a triple and six RBI, while Jenna Berger (1-0) earned the shutout win, giving up just two hits and striking out seven in 5.0 innings of work, while Sara Thomas (1-0) picked up the game one win as she allowed four runs on five hits while fanning five batters in 5.0 innings.
Harford will kick off the spring trip on Friday, March 6 when they take on the 2008 Western New York Athletic Conference co-champion Mercyhurst North East Saints (3-5) at 4:00 p.m. before facing its toughest opponent of the season in Chattanooga State Tech.
The Tigers (16-3) were voted No. 2 in the NJCAA Division I Preseason Poll, behind 2008 national runner-up Santa Fe. Chattanooga State Tech finished third in the 2008 national tournament after claiming its seventh straight Region VII title. Harford will take on the Tigers on Friday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 7 will see the Owls face-off against the Coastal Georgia Mariners (8-13) at 2:00 p.m. before taking on the Pitt Bulldogs (4-2) at 6:00 p.m.
Harford will wrap things up in Georgia on Sunday, March 8 when they play Pitt at 10:00 a.m. before concluding the trip with a game against the NAIA University of Saint Mary (Kansas) Spires (0-4) at 12:00 p.m.
The SCAD Smash Hit Tournament runs from Feb. 24-March 12 and features 21 teams from NCAA Division II and III, NAIA and NJCAA.
