Bel Air, MD- The newly organized Marylanders for Fair Property Taxation had close to 200 people show up up to discuss their growing dissatisfication with county assessment growth and higher property taxes Sunday in Bel Air.
The group which was form by Forest Hill resident Roy Whitely and others are working with Senator Barry Glassman 35R on a group of bills to reform how assessments are calculated and appealed. Sen. Glassman’s four bills would place an immediate freeze on re-assessments and have the State Department of Taxation back track into areas which have seen a down turn. Some how Harford Countians received increases ranging from three to nine percent on average in a down market.
His bills would also create an independent ombudsman to assist taxpayers navigate the appeals process and would extend the time to note an appeal from 45 to 90 days. The final bill would create a statewide study group to evaluate the current methods of valuation and explore ways to make the appeals process easier along with finding effiencies and savings in the State Department of Assessment and Taxation.
