“Snack Tax” Dead: Harford Company Sees Some Benefits from Recession

Officials in Annapolis have determined to hold off on a proposed “snack tax,” canceling the hearing that was supposed to occur on Wednesday. Frito-Lay, which has a 400-employee plant in Aberdeen, had opposed the bill over the past several years. It was one tax proposal that wasn’t approved in the 2007 special session.

Company officials had even threatened to close the plant if the tax was approved to move out of state. Elected officials from Harford County had been opposed to the tax, saying that it would cost jobs.

State officials had considered the tax a possible source of millions in revenue. With the downturn in the economy, however, it has been determined that the timing for the proposal is not right.
