From the HCC sports desk:
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s basketball team tallied just 10 field goals in a lopsided 61-28 loss to Baltimore City on Monday evening at the Susquehanna Center.
The 28 points was a season-low for the Fighting Owls (6-12, 1-7 MDJUCO), and two points less than they managed in their last meeting versus the Panthers (10-5, 7-3 MDJUCO).
Freshman Kiara Reeves (Aberdeen, Md./C. Milton Wright) led the Owls on the night with seven points and 11 boards, while adding two steals and assists each, all of her points coming in the second half.
Tanika Jeffers tallied a double-double for the Panthers with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while dishing out five assists and assisting on four buckets and Brittaney Joyner led all scorers with 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting while grabbing six rebounds.
The Panthers controlled the game, holding a double-digit advantage over the Owls for the first half of play
Baltimore jumped to an 8-0 lead less than three minutes into the period and would be almost two more minutes before Harford got on the board thanks to a jumper by freshman Brittany Mears (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston).
After a trey by Jeffers and layup by Joyner after a Harford miss, the Panthers would take their largest lead, 13-2 with 14:39 to go.
Shavon Scott would add two free throws at the 13:21 mark to give Baltimore a 13-point lead, 15-2, before the Owls saw their largest run of the game with two free throws from freshman Sarah Spalt (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston), and, after three scoreless minutes, a layup by sophomore Jasmine Parsons (Edgewood, Md./Joppatowne) to cut the lead to nine, 15-6 with 10:00 to go.
It would be the last time the Owls saw a single-digit deficit, however, as Scott added a layup at the 8:33 mark and after swiping the ball from Spalt, Charda Lomax tacked on another bucket to bring the lead back to 13, 19-6 with 8:15 left.
A layup by Parsons cut the advantage to 11, but Scott answered with a layup of her own off a dish by Scott, before the teams would see another three-minute scoring break, which was broken by a made free throw from Parsons at 4:36 that made the score 21-9 in favor of the Panthers.
The two teams would go back and forth for the next two minutes and change, with Baltimore leading by 12, 25-13 with just over one minute remaining and neither team would score as the Panthers took the 25-13 advantage into the half.
The second half started out much the same as the first, with Baltimore scoring eight straight points to take a 20-point, 33-13 lead, before Mears broke the silence for the Owls with two free throws at the 16:16 mark.
It would be the only points that the Owls would score in the first 12:45 of the period, as their next score did not fall until the 7:15 mark off a free throw by Reeves to make the score 49-16 in favor of Baltimore.
A foul by sophomore Marie Fox (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) put Joyner at the line, who buried two free throws to give the Panthers their largest lead of the game, 51-16 with just under seven minutes to play.
The Owls would see their most offensive production in the last seven minutes as they netted 12 points, but they could not break the 30-point deficit, as the Panthers cruised to the 61-28 win.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face the Philadelphia Colonials for a 6:00 p.m. game before wrapping up the week with a contest on Friday at CCBC-Dundalk.
