BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s basketball team scored a season-low 30 points and combined for a season-low 76 total points, as it fell, 46-30, to Baltimore City on Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna Center.
The loss is the second straight for the Fighting Owls (1-7), and the lowest total offensive output since managing just 33 points in their season-opening 85-33 setback.
The Panthers (6-2) did not fare much better, as both teams fell below the 30% mark for field goal shooting for the afternoon’s game.
Freshman Brittany Mears (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) was the standout for an otherwise dismal Owls’ effort, tallying 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting including 2-for-4 from behind the arc and grabbing six boards, while Tanika Jeffers led the Panthers with 20 total points and five assists and rebounds each, four of those field goals from long-range.
Harford connected on just 12 of 57 shots for a 21.1% from the floor, while Baltimore City was successful on 15 of 57 attempts for a 26.3% shooting.
The first five minutes of the game saw four ties and two lead changes, but after the Panthers took a 10-8 lead with 13:21 left, they began to widen the gap, extending their lead to as much as 14 points, 24-10, in the first half before taking a nine-point lead, 27-18 into halftime.
After Harford cut that lead to five points, 30-25, just over five minutes into the first half, a trey from Jeffers put Baltimore City up by eight and the next 5:45, neither team would score a point, until the Panthers netted two free throws at 8:23 to extend their lead to 10, 35-25.
Harford would make just two field goals for the remainder of the game and be outscored 11-5 as Baltimore City rolled to the 16-point, 46-30 win.
The Fighting Owls finish out the month of December and the calendar year next Saturday, Dec. 20 when they host Philadelphia at 1:00 p.m.
