From the HCC sports desk:
BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s basketball team picked up its first victory of the year as it downed the jayvee squad from Catholic University, 64-56, on Monday night at Susquehanna Center.
The Fighting Owls (1-5) took a two-point deficit, 26-24, into the half, but outscored the Cardinals (0-1), 40-30 in the second half to earn the win.
Freshman Kiara Reeves (Aberdeen, Md./C. Milton Wright) led Harford with a double-double, tallying 19 points and 14 rebounds while shooting 8-for-14 from the field and blocking four shots. Freshman Sarah Spalt (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) came just one board away from a double-double, totaling 16 points and nine boards while also adding seven assists and shooting 5-for-9 and 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Kim Dwyer was just one point short of a double-double for the Cardinals with 10 boards, nine points and four assists, while Claire Peterson led the team with 25 points.
The Cardinals controlled the first 20:00, never allowing the Owls to come closer than one point and, at one point, held a seven-point advantage over Harford but came out of the half with just a one basket lead.
The Owls took their first lead at the 15:59 mark in the second half after an 8-5 run to start the period. They would expand that lead to three points, 37-33, with 13:56 left and six points, 41-35, with 11:27 to go before the Cardinals chipped away and knotted the score at 43 points apiece at the 8:15 mark.
Harford would build its lead back to four points thanks to two consecutive Catholic fouls and two made shots from the stripe by Spalt and freshman Brittany Mears (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston), but after fouls by Reeves and freshman Natasha Bond (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), the Cardinals added four free throws of their own to tie the game at 47.
The Cardinals would take their final lead of the game, 49-47, on a Peterson layup before two free throws from sophomore Jasmine Parsons (Edgewood, Md./Joppatowne) notched the final tie of the game at 49 points each.
Harford would add 10 straight points to take a 59-49 lead with 2:12 left to play and the closest Catholic would come would be six points, 62-56, after a trey from Peterson with nine seconds left. The ensuing foul committed by Peterson would put Spalt on the line, where she knocked down her final two free throws to give Harford the 64-56 win.
The Fighting Owls return to action after the Thanksgiving break when they host Howard as part of a double-header with the men’s team on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 6:00 p.m.
