HCC Women’s Soccer Drops Final Game In Chiller

BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s soccer team, playing in its last game of the regular season, fell 3-0 to Mercer on Thursday night at a frigid Harford Stadium.

The Fighting Owls (9-6-0) managed just eight shots, and just two in the first half, compared to the Vikings’ (15-3-1) 22 total shots, with Mercer dominating the play of the game on Harford’s day to honor its two-year sophomore players.

The Vikings broke the scoreless tie with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, at the 40:21 mark, as sophomore goalie Jessica Stumpf (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) got a hand on Kasey Kenny’s shot, but couldn’t control it completely, letting Tina DeAngelis get a crack at the ball and knock it into the back of the net to give Mercer a 1-0 lead.

After the half, Mercer wasted no time, notching its second goal at the 51:43 mark as Erica Juricic blasted one from about 25 yards out on a breakaway down the left side, and her ball, just out of Stumpf’s reach, found the back of the net in the upper left corner.

The Vikings’ final goal of the evening came in much the same as their first, this time Jesse Lee Remus shot from about 15 yards out on the left side and a diving Stumpf batted the ball away only to have Carolyn Walters put the rebound into the goal to give Mercer the 3-0 win.

Stumpf totaled 10 saves on the evening, while her counterpart, Heidi Summers, tallied four and the Vikings held a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Fighting Owls will compete in the Region XX Tournament next week, where they will battle CCBC-Essex and Anne Arundel for the right to play in the district championship game. Seedings are yet to be determined, but the No. 1 team will advance straight to the Region XX Championship on Saturday Nov. 1 at Anne Arundel, while the No. 2 and No. 3 teams will meet in a semifinal on Thursday, Oct. 30 at Anne Arundel.
