ST. MARY’S CITY, Md.—The Harford women’s tennis team won its sixth straight match as the Fighting Owls (6-0) downed NCAA Division III opponent St. Mary’s, 7-2, on Friday afternoon in St. Mary’s City.
Freshmen Kate Tiburzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Kelsey Strine (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) remain perfect on the season after taking individual victories at No. 5 and No. 4 singles, respectively, while the No. 1 doubles team of freshman Ashley Sherinsky (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Katrina Tiedeman (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) took their first dual match loss.
Tiburzi rallied from a one set deficit to defeat Jerilyn Rogalski, 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 5 spot, while Strine also endured a three-set match to take the No. 4 win against Katie Lackler, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.
Tiburzi also teamed with sophomore Julie Strong (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) at No. 3 doubles and moved to 5-0 on the season with an 8-3 victory over Aviva Brown and Kate David, while the No. 2 team of freshmen Courtney Brewer (Street, Md./North Harford ) and Agnes Burke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) edged out Colleen O’Neill and Kathleen Ramsey, 8-6.
The No. 1 team of Sherinsky and Tiedeman fell to Sarah Weisse and Michelle Compton, 8-5, but both players came back and earned singles victories as Sherinsky defeated Weisse, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) in the No. 1 slot and Tiedeman handed Compton a defeat, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 position.
Brewer was the only other winner for Harford on the day as she pulled out a straight set, 6-2, 6-2 win over Monica Powell at No. 3 singles, while Burke fell to Cropper, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 spot.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Monday, Oct. 6 when they host Montgomery College-Rockville in a 3:30 p.m. match.
