BEL AIR, Md.—The Harford women’s tennis team won its fifth straight match and remains undefeated for the season as it downed Hagerstown, 8-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Harford CC.
The Fighting Owls (5-0) dropped just one match, at No. 3 singles, in their second match against the Hawks, and two Owl players avenged losses their second times around.
Once again, Harford swept the doubles matches with the No. 1 team of freshman Ashley Sherinsky (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Katrina Tiedeman (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) defeating Tessa and Mia Doyle, 8-2, the No. 2 team of freshmen Courtney Brewer (Street, Md./North Harford) and Kelsey Strine (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) downing Carrie Martin and Gina Garbaya, 8-5, and the No. 3 team of freshman Kate Tiburzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Julie Strong (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) beat Carly Jones and Lindsay Hathaway, 8-3.
In round number two at No. 1 singles Sherinsky came out the victor against Tessa Doyle, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, while Tiedeman also won her second battle with Mia Doyle, taking the 6-3, 7-5 decision at No. 2 singles.
Strine and Tiburzi followed suit at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, defeating Garbaya, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 and Jones, 6-2, 6-1, respectively, while freshman Agnes Burke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) blanked Hathaway, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Brewer was the only other Owl competitor and fell to Martin, 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Friday when they travel to NCAA Division III St. Mary’s for a 2:30 p.m. match.
