HAGERSTOWN, Md.—The Harford women’s tennis team remains undefeated after downing the defending Region XX champions, Hagerstown, 6-3 on Friday afternoon at Hagerstown Community College.
The Fighting Owls (3-0) started out with a sweep of the doubles matches as the No. 1 team of freshman Ashley Sherinsky (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Katrina Tiedeman (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) defeated Tessa and Mia Doyle, 8-4, the No.2 team of freshmen Courtney Brewer (Street, Md./North Harford) and Agnes Burke (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace), playing together for the first team, downed Carrie Martin and Gina Garbaya, 8-6, and finally the No. 3 team of freshman Kate Tiburzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Julie Strong (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) trounced Carly Jones and Lindsay Hathaway, 8-0.
The bottom half of the Owls lineup really came through for Harford as freshman Kelsey Strine (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) defeated Garbaya at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1, Burke won against Hatha way, 6-1, 6-2 and Tiburzi, who head coach George Budelis named the MVP of the match for her strong performances and relentless attack, defeated Jones, 6-0, 6-4 to give the Owls the 6-3 win.
The top half of the lineup did not fare as well against the extremely strong Hawks players as Sherinsky fell 2-6, 6-0, 7-5 to Tessa Doyle, Tiedeman was defeated 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Mia Doyle and Brewer lost to Martin, 7-5, 6-1.
The Fighting Owls return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 23 when they travel to face Montgomery College-Rockville for a 3:30 p.m. match.
